The Full Guide

Once the implant has fully integrated with the bone (usually 3–6 months after placement), a short procedure uncovers the top of the implant and attaches a small "healing abutment". A temporary connector piece that shapes the gum tissue into the right contour before the final crown is made, similar to a dressmaker's form shaping fabric before the final garment goes on.

Your final crown needs a natural-looking collar where it meets the gumline. That shape doesn't happen on its own. The healing abutment trains the gum tissue into the right contour over a couple weeks before the crown stage, so the finished result looks like it's growing out of your gum the way a natural tooth does. This step is sometimes skipped if a healing abutment was already placed at the time of the original surgery instead of a covered screw.

Before Your Appointment

No special prep needed for this minor procedure.

Anesthesia

Local anesthetic is used, often a lighter numbing since it's a minor procedure. For upper teeth, numbness is usually limited to the cheek, lip, and gum near the tooth. Lower back teeth typically require a "block" injection, which numbs an entire side of the lower jaw. Lip, chin, and often the tongue, not just the tooth being worked on.

What Happens

The gum over the implant is gently reopened (sometimes it's already visible, requiring no incision at all), and a healing abutment is screwed onto the implant.

Duration

The whole procedure typically takes only 20–30 minutes.

Right After

Numb for a couple hours if anesthesia was used. Most patients say this step feels noticeably easier than the original implant placement.

First 1–2 Days

Minimal discomfort. Usually just mild gum tenderness. Gentle brushing around the area starting the next day; salt water rinses help keep it clean. Most people resume normal activity within 24 hours.

Following 1–2 Weeks

Your gum tissue gradually shapes itself around the healing abutment. Once that tissue has settled, we'll take an impression or digital scan and move on to your Implant Crown & Bridge.

Call us if

the healing abutment comes loose, or you have significant pain or swelling beyond a couple days.
