What It Is

A Gentle Way to Fade White Spots

ICON is a resin infiltration treatment for the chalky white spots that form when the surface of the enamel loses minerals. A thin, liquid resin seeps into the tiny pores of the spot and is hardened with a light, so the spot reflects light like the healthy enamel around it and blends in.

There is no drilling, and numbing is typically not needed, so your natural tooth stays intact. ICON does not whiten teeth. It makes the spot blend in.

Why White Spots Happen

Common After Braces and Aligners

White spots often show up after orthodontic treatment, when plaque builds up around brackets or along the edges of aligners and slowly weakens the enamel. They can also come from early decay. Careful brushing and flossing during treatment helps prevent them, and ICON is how we treat them if they appear.

Who ICON Helps

Good Candidates

White spots on the visible surfaces of your teeth, including spots left after braces or clear aligners, and some early decay that has not formed a cavity.

Not a Fit For

Cavities that have broken through the enamel, deep stains, or spots that go beyond the enamel. Those may need a filling or veneers instead.

A Note on Other Marks

Some other discolorations, such as certain types of fluorosis, may respond less predictably. We will tell you honestly what to expect during your exam.

What to Expect

Your ICON Visit

  1. Exam & Planning

We confirm the white spot is limited to the enamel and not a cavity, and then discuss the results you can expect.

  2. Prep

Your teeth are cleaned and your gums protected. A gentle conditioning gel prepares the affected area and is then rinsed away.

  3. Preview

The area is dried with a special solution to give you a preview of how the white spot may look after treatment.

  4. Infiltration

A clear resin is applied to penetrate the affected enamel and help blend the white spot with the surrounding tooth. The resin is hardened with a special light, and additional applications may be used as needed.

  5. Finish

The tooth is polished for a smooth, natural-looking finish. ICON treatment is typically completed in a single visit.

ICON is for early enamel changes, not cavities that have broken through the enamel. If a spot is deeper than it looks, we will recommend the right treatment, such as a filling.

Yes. White spots after orthodontic treatment are one of the most common reasons for ICON, and it can be done once your braces or aligners come off. Dr. Kim may recommend it at the end of your treatment.
