Orthodontics for Every Age

Care Matched to the Stage of Growth

Children

Some orthodontic problems are easier to recognize and manage while a child is still growing. An early evaluation allows Dr. Kim to assess jaw development, tooth eruption, crowding and bite relationships, and determine whether treatment is needed now or whether observation is the better choice.

Early Orthodontics →

Teens

Braces and clear aligners can correct crowding, spacing and bite problems while fitting into school, sports and everyday life. Dr. Kim helps families choose the treatment approach that best matches the teenager’s orthodontic needs and ability to maintain the appliance.

Orthodontics for Teens →

Adults

Orthodontic treatment can improve both appearance and function at virtually any age. Adult treatment may include clear aligners, braces, relapse correction or orthodontic preparation before implants, veneers, crowns or other restorative care.

Treatment Options

Orthodontic Treatment Options

Early Orthodontics

Growth guidance and interceptive care, including palatal expanders, while a child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth.

About Early Orthodontics →

Braces

Fixed brackets and wires, often the most predictable choice for complex crowding and bite correction.

About Braces →

Clear Aligners

A removable, less visible option for suitable cases, worn in a planned sequence of trays.

About Clear Aligners →

Retainers

Teeth can shift after treatment. A retainer holds the corrected position once appliances come off.

About Retainers →

Surgical Orthodontics

Impacted teeth, orthodontic extractions and jaw discrepancies, planned together with oral surgeon Dr. Sung Han.

About Surgical Orthodontics →

Temporary Anchorage Devices

Tiny, temporary screws that give braces and aligners a steady anchor for more precise tooth movement.

About TADs →

The best orthodontic treatment depends on your bite, tooth position, age, growth and treatment goals. Dr. Kim will recommend the approach that provides the appropriate balance of predictability, efficiency and aesthetics.

Why Age 7 Matters

Why Have an Orthodontic Evaluation Around Age 7?

An early orthodontic evaluation does not mean your child needs braces at age seven.

At this age, permanent teeth are beginning to erupt and the jaws are still developing. This gives an orthodontist an opportunity to identify certain problems early and determine whether treatment, monitoring or simply waiting is most appropriate.

  • Crossbite
  • Underbite
  • Severe crowding
  • Narrow upper jaw
  • Early or delayed loss of baby teeth
  • Abnormal tooth eruption
  • Impacted or poorly positioned permanent teeth
  • Jaw-growth discrepancies
  • Persistent oral habits affecting development

Sometimes the best treatment is no treatment yet.

Many children simply return periodically so Dr. Kim can monitor growth and eruption until the timing is right.

With Oral Surgery

When Orthodontics and Oral Surgery Need to Work Together

Some orthodontic cases involve teeth that are impacted, unerupted or require surgical treatment. Because Dr. Kim and oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Sung Han are part of the same clinical team, orthodontic and surgical treatment can be planned together when appropriate.

Impacted Canines

Dr. Kim guides the orthodontic movement while Dr. Han can surgically expose an impacted tooth when necessary.

Exposure of Impacted Teeth →

Orthodontic Extractions

When tooth removal is part of an orthodontic treatment plan, timing can be coordinated between the orthodontic and surgical teams.

About Extractions →

Complex Eruption Problems

Imaging may be used when appropriate to understand the position of impacted or abnormally erupting teeth.

Jaw & Skeletal Concerns

Patients with significant jaw discrepancies can receive coordinated orthodontic and surgical evaluation when appropriate.

Common Questions

Orthodontics FAQ

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up by about age 7, when permanent teeth are starting to come in and the jaws are still developing.

No. Many children are simply monitored at periodic visits until the timing is right, and some never need early treatment at all.

Neither is better in every case. Aligners are removable and less visible, while braces are often more predictable for complex crowding and bite correction. Dr. Kim will go over which suits your case.

Yes. Healthy teeth and gums matter more than age. Adult treatment often involves clear aligners, braces, correcting shifting after earlier treatment, or aligning teeth before restorative work.

It depends on what is being corrected. Dr. Kim gives you an estimated timeline after evaluating your bite, and reviews it with you before treatment starts.

You do not need a referral to schedule an orthodontic consultation with Dr. Kim.

Sometimes. Moving teeth into better positions first can create proper space for an implant or improve the result of veneers or crowns. Dr. Kim plans these cases with the restorative team.

Call the office and we will advise you on what to do and whether you need to be seen sooner than your next scheduled visit.

They can. White spots may appear after braces or clear aligners if plaque builds up on the teeth during treatment, and careful brushing and flossing helps prevent them. If they do appear, we recommend ICON resin infiltration, a gentle treatment with no drilling that blends the spots into your natural enamel.
