Stainless Steel Crowns Recovery
A durable cap for a baby molar. Here’s what the adjustment period looks like.
The Full Guide
A pre-made metal cap that fits over a tooth. Most commonly used on children's baby molars, including after a baby root canal (pulpotomy) when the tooth needs extra reinforcement, or as a strong, budget-friendly interim crown on a badly broken-down adult tooth.
Stainless steel crowns are fast to place, extremely durable for the years until a baby tooth naturally falls out, and on baby teeth they also help hold the natural spacing for the permanent tooth coming in later, something a filling alone can't always reliably do on a heavily damaged tooth.
Wondering if your child's tooth needs a crown instead of a filling? Book a consultation and we'll take a look.
No special prep needed beyond a normal meal, since your child will be numb for a few hours afterward.
Local anesthetic numbs the area before we begin. For upper teeth, numbness is usually limited to the cheek, lip, and gum near the tooth. Lower back teeth typically require a "block" injection, which numbs an entire side of the lower jaw, including the lip, chin, and often the tongue, not just the tooth being worked on.
A small amount of the tooth is shaped down to make room for the crown, a pre-formed metal crown is selected and fit, then trimmed and crimped as needed, and the crown is cemented into place.
Numb for 2–4 hours, same as a filling.
The crown may feel slightly "tall," thick, or different to the tongue. This is completely normal and settles within a day or two as the bite adjusts.
Should feel like a normal tooth. Normal chewing can resume as soon as numbness wears off.
the crown feels loose or comes off, the bite still feels too high after a couple of days, or discomfort persists beyond 24–48 hours.
