What It Is

An abscess is essentially a pocket of infection that needs to be drained and treated. Facial swelling is often a sign the infection has spread beyond the tooth itself.

What To Do

Step by step

  1. 1

Rinse with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8oz water) several times a day to help draw down inflammation.

  2. 2

Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face to reduce swelling.

  3. 3

Call us right away. Don't wait to "see if it gets better," as dental infections can spread quickly.

  4. 4

If swelling is severe, spreading toward your eye or down into your neck, or you're having trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the emergency room immediately.

Call us if
