The Full Guide

A thin protective coating painted into the deep grooves of your back teeth. The same spots where food and bacteria tend to hide from your toothbrush. It seals those grooves off before decay has a chance to start.

The deep grooves on molars are naturally hard to keep clean, even with good brushing habits. Sealants act as a physical barrier over exactly those spots, which is why they're such an effective, no-drill way to prevent the most common type of childhood cavity.

Wondering if your child's molars are good candidates for sealants? Book a consultation and we'll take a look.

Before Your Appointment

No special prep needed.

Anesthesia

No numbing needed for this procedure. There's no drilling involved.

What Happens

The tooth is cleaned and dried, then a mild etching gel roughens the surface so the sealant bonds securely. It's rinsed off and the tooth dried again, the liquid sealant is painted on and flows into the grooves, and a curing light hardens it in seconds. The bite is checked to make sure it doesn't feel high.

Right After

No numbness, no drilling. You can eat and drink immediately.

General Care

The tooth may feel slightly "different" or high to your bite for a day or two while you adjust; this should even out on its own. There's no real recovery period otherwise. Brush and floss normally. A sealant only protects the surface it's placed on, not the rest of the tooth. Sealants typically last several years and are checked (and touched up if needed) at regular cleanings.

Call us if

your bite still feels off after a couple of days, or you notice new sensitivity in the sealed tooth.
